The aim of the post-secondary transition workshop is to prepare students by helping them understand the differences between secondary school and post-secondary education, and to recognize how their rights and responsibilities may change. We also provide information on the process of accessing services and adaptive technology, with emphasis on utilizing the Disability Resource Centres and support networks that are readily available. Self-advocacy is an important theme in the workshop, as we continuously mark the importance of communicating individual needs to ensure a successful learning experience. In the past workshops, we have provided each student with a USB memory sticks, containing additional resources for students to navigate the post-secondary system –most notably, a Transition Checklist (Note: this is regularly updated each year – current version: Spring 2017).

Responses to workshops were generally positive, even amongst the teachers who found it very beneficial in that they can now support their graduating students more effectively. Comments included “Very useful as a teacher so that I can inform my students” and I think you should do it every year”. Many students also found this workshop to be relevant and useful, in which one particular student said the biggest take-away was that “self-advocacy is critical”.
